General Motors (GM) and Tesla have opened over 17,800 superchargers in the United States and Canada for GM electric vehicle owners, including Chevy, GMC, and Cadillac.

While GM vehicle owners now have access to Tesla’s fast charging network, they will still need to purchase Combined Charging System (CCS) adapters to use the superchargers. These adapters cost $225, and GM is offering free shipping until the end of the year.

It’s worth noting that while Ford struggled to meet the demand for adapters, GM is collaborating with an additional supplier to ensure supply. The experience of accessing superchargers for GM owners is expected to be smoother than for Ford users, as GM has already planned the rollout for spring 2024 and is focused on testing the system to provide a consistent experience.

However, GM has not implemented the “plug-and-charge” feature on the superchargers, meaning users will need to start charging through the vehicle’s app, unlike Ford users who can plug in and charge automatically.

In addition to superchargers, GM is expanding its charging partnerships, including a collaboration with EVGo and Ionna, which promises to install 30,000 fast chargers by 2030. GM’s strategy involves offering a variety of charging solutions, including portable chargers and systems to power household appliances, aiming to facilitate electric vehicle use both at home and in public spaces.
