TikToker sarahsig captured a man trying to refuel in Bossier City, in the state of Louisiana, but the prices kept rising even without him pressing the fuel pump trigger.

“Are they making fools of us?” the man said in the video. He holds the nozzle without touching the tank, and it is possible to see that nothing is coming out of the pump. The display shows $34.23 and shortly after shows $40.52 with the nozzle still away.

The average price in the state is $3.79 per gallon.

“Gas” was “gaslighting” (making them doubt their own perception), the TikToker wrote. The video has already surpassed 8.3 million views.

Users pointed out in the comments that the pump could have a problem called “meter creeping.” This happens when the value keeps increasing even though no fuel is being dispensed.

The failure can occur due to wear of internal parts in the pump. One of the valves may not be sealing completely, causing the display to show higher values than normal.

The recommendation is to alert a gas station employee to reset the nozzle or inspect the pump. Users commented about times when they experienced “meter creeping.”

“Wait, I’ve always put in the same amount regardless of the price, and my tank fills a different amount every time,” one profile recalled.
“They’re… manipulating us,” joked another.
