The Chinese Navy has released new footage of the Fujian aircraft carrier, its largest and most modern warship, equipped with electromagnetic catapults.
The footage shows air operations with J-15T and J-35 fighter jets, along with the KJ-600 early warning aircraft, a significant milestone that sets Fujian apart from its predecessors, Liaoning and Shandong. The vessel, weighing 85,000 tons, is on its ninth sea trial since May 2024, this time in the South China Sea.
The videos reveal takeoffs and landings, as well as the presence of three KJ-600 aircraft, highlighting the progress of China’s early warning airborne aviation program. The deck operations have also drawn attention due to their similarities with procedures used by the United States Navy, such as the use of distinct colors to differentiate crew functions.
While the release of these images marks an important milestone, experts warn that the Fujian will take a few more years to reach full operational capacity. The expectation is that, after completing testing and qualification, the ship will be officially inducted into the Chinese Navy, solidifying its role in the country’s naval modernization and strengthening its presence in international waters.
