France is modernizing its Mirage 2000D RMV fighters to face new threats, especially enemy drones.
The aircraft have been equipped with MICA IR missiles, replacing the old Magic II, and a 30mm cannon, although the latter is still used only for ground support due to the lack of an aerial targeting system.
The French Army is also considering equipping the jets with laser-guided missiles, such as Thales’ ACULEUS-LG, to increase their effectiveness against drones, a strategy already adopted by U.S. F-16 fighters in the Red Sea. Additionally, the return of using the AASM guided bombs is under study, expanding the Mirage’s capabilities in precision strikes.
The upgrades are not limited to weapons. The project includes software updates and the integration of artificial intelligence, allowing the Mirage 2000D RMV to process data from the TALIOS optical system in real time.
According to General Jérôme Bellanger, head of the French Air Force, the aircraft still has great potential and continues to evolve with flexible and cost-effective solutions.
