One of the passengers was saved with the help of Rick Harper, a Canada Post employee. He broke the car windows so she could escape the fire and smoke.
“You couldn’t open the doors. I assume the young woman would have tried to open the door from the inside as she was pretty desperate to get out,” Harper told the Toronto Star.
Harper couldn’t see if there were more people inside the car due to the thick black smoke that covered the vehicle’s interior.
Calgary Fire Department Captain Randy Schmitz stated that electric car doors require power, and without it, they become inoperable. It is believed that the main reason the doors didn’t work was a battery failure due to the crash.
“Certainly, the intensity of the fire is directly linked to the battery cells in the Tesla,” said Jim Jessop, Deputy Fire Chief.
