Ford is recalling about 700,000 SUVs in the United States after an investigation found a defect that could cause fuel leakage in the vehicles.
In a statement released Wednesday (16), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that the fuel injector in the affected vehicles could crack and leak fuel into the engine compartment, potentially causing a fire under the hood.
The recall includes more than 694,000 vehicles from the American automaker, including some Bronco Sport models from 2021 to 2024 and Escape models from 2020 to 2022 equipped with 1.5 engines.
Around 2,083 cars (0.38%) are estimated to have the defect, according to Ford, which stated it is still working on a solution to the problem.
For now, Ford dealerships in the U.S. are offering a free update to the engine control software of the affected vehicles.
Drivers may notice a fuel smell near the vehicle, smoke or flames coming from the engine compartment, or warning lights on the dashboard.
The automaker expects to send letters notifying owners of the safety risk by August 18, and a second letter will be sent once a solution is found.
