Ford has developed an innovative system to detect illegal substances for its vehicles, aiming to prevent owners from being used as “blind mules” by traffickers.

This technology, patented in March 2023 and published in September of the same year, monitors the car using sensors and cameras to identify suspicious activities, such as the presence of individuals nearby for long periods or additional weights that could indicate the transport of illegal substances.

The system works by checking the weight of the vehicle, listening for unusual sounds in the vicinity, and detecting unknown GPS radio frequencies. If any irregularities are identified, the car’s cameras are activated to capture images as evidence.

Although the patent represents an advancement in the fight against trafficking, there is currently no timeline for implementation, as many companies only register patents to protect their intellectual property.

The increase in fentanyl trafficking, which can be smuggled in small quantities, presents new challenges, making it easier for traffickers to hide illegal substances in vehicles. Additionally, techniques like relay attacks, used by thieves to steal cars, can facilitate traffickers’ access to a large number of vehicles to carry out their illegal activities.
