Ford has unveiled version 1.5 of BlueCruise, its Level 2 hands-free driving system, which is now capable of performing automatic lane changes.
The feature is available on the 2025 Mustang Mach-E and allows the car to overtake slow vehicles or move out of traffic faster, without any driver action. The update also brings improvements to the interface, which more clearly indicates when the function is active or temporarily disabled.
Besides the new features, BlueCruise 1.5 requires an enhanced sensor suite and a more powerful processing unit, which prevents its installation on vehicles equipped with earlier versions. In tests conducted on the I-96 highway in the United States, the system demonstrated efficient responses and smooth lane changes, although in more critical situations the driver still needs to intervene, a common characteristic of Level 2 driving systems.
With these changes, BlueCruise approaches GM’s Super Cruise, which has offered automatic lane changes since 2021 and covers a larger road network.
Ford’s new system is included for one year in the GT and Rally versions of the Mach-E, while other models require paid activation or a monthly or yearly subscription. The expectation is that the technology will be expanded to other brand vehicles in the future.
