The Lanying R6000, prototype of China’s first converted unmanned aircraft, flew for the first time, according to China Science.
The first flight of the R6000 took place in the city of Deyang, Sichuan Province, in southwest China. It was not reported how long the converted aircraft prototype remained in the air.
The aircraft was developed by United Aircraft. It weighs six tons and will be able to carry up to 12 passengers for distances of up to four thousand kilometers.
The aircraft can perform vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) like a helicopter but reaches higher speeds during horizontal flight than helicopters.
According to United, the Lanying R6000 is capable of reaching speeds of up to 550 kilometers per hour, with a maximum flight altitude of 7,600 meters.
There is the possibility that the R6000 may be used for military purposes, including personnel transport or participation in other missions.
The payload weight can reach up to two tons, allowing the aircraft to be used for surveillance, reconnaissance, electronic warfare, and signal relay.
