Fire forces crew to abandon cargo ship carrying 3,000 cars in the Pacific Ocean (X @USCGAlaska)
A cargo ship named Morning Midas, carrying about 3,000 vehicles, including approximately 800 electric models, was abandoned in the Pacific Ocean after a fire.
The vessel was sailing under the Liberian flag, departed from China, and was heading to Mexico. The fire started on the deck where the electric cars were located, and the 22 crew members had to be rescued by another ship. No one was injured.
According to the operator Zodiac Maritime, controlling fires involving electric vehicles at sea is particularly difficult due to intense heat and the risk of re-ignition.
The brand of the vehicles on board is not yet known. The ship was more than 480 km off the coast of Alaska at the time of the incident.
Similar cases have become more frequent in recent years. Examples include the sinking of a ship carrying 4,000 luxury cars in the Azores in 2022, and the capsizing of another with 4,200 vehicles off the coast of Georgia in 2019. According to insurer Allianz Commercial, 2024 already records the highest number of such incidents in a decade, highlighting growing risks due to ship sizes and the complexity of fighting fires at sea.
