The Dubai AirShow 2025 kicked off with full force. Emirates revealed Boeing’s largest order in recent years, signing a contract to acquire 65 new Boeing 777-9 aircraft in a deal valued at US$ 38 billion.

With this order, the total number of Boeing aircraft already contracted by the airline rises to 315 units, including 270 from the 777X family, solidifying Emirates as the model’s main global customer.

Options for the 777-8 and the future 777-10 strengthen Boeing’s development efforts

A key point of the new agreement is the option to convert the current order to the 777-8 model or the still-in-development 777-10. This flexibility demonstrates Emirates’ support for the expansion of the 777X line, aligning with the airline’s long-term fleet renewal strategy and Dubai’s growth goals.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, chairman and CEO of the Emirates Airline and Group, highlighted the importance of the 777-10 project:

“We have long said that airlines need aircraft with greater capacity and higher efficiency, considering the expected growth in air traffic and increasing airport restrictions. We fully support Boeing’s work on the technical and economic justification of the 777-10 and have secured options to convert our 777-9 order to the 777-10 or 777-8.”

World’s largest buyer of GE9X engines

The engine package has also grown: Emirates ordered 130 additional GE9X units, bringing the total to 540 engines — the largest quantity ever purchased by a single airline for the 777X family.

Current fleet and future deliveries

Emirates remains the world’s largest operator of the Boeing 777 series, with a fleet consisting of:

  • 119 Boeing 777-300ER
  • 10 Boeing 777-200LR
  • 11 Boeing 777F freighters

Deliveries of the new aircraft are scheduled through 2038. The first Boeing 777-9 from the updated agreement is expected to be delivered in the second quarter of 2027, according to the manufacturer.
