Companies owned by Elon Musk reportedly purchased more than 1,000 Cybertrucks in an effort to artificially boost sales figures for the Tesla vehicle, according to a report by S&P Global Mobility.
According to findings reported by Bloomberg, SpaceX alone acquired 1,279 units of the model in the last quarter of 2025, while other Musk companies purchased an additional 60 vehicles during the same period.
Together, these purchases would account for about 18% of all Tesla Cybertruck pickups sold in the country. It is estimated that without these acquisitions, sales would have dropped by 51% in the final quarter of last year.
According to the report, the operation may have exceeded $100 million in value. And it does not appear to have been a one-off move. According to Bloomberg, new orders for Cybertrucks were placed by Musk’s companies in early 2026.
The situation comes amid challenges faced by Tesla in the automotive market. The Cybertruck, one of the brand’s most anticipated launches, has seen lower-than-expected sales. At the same time, Tesla’s overall sales have also declined.
In 2025, the company recorded 1.64 million vehicle registrations, a 9% drop compared to the previous year. As a result, Tesla lost its leadership in the electric vehicle market to Chinese automaker BYD, which sold 2.26 million electrified vehicles during the same period.
