Elon Musk, through his company SpaceX, signed a contract with Lunar Outpost to send an innovative lunar vehicle to the Moon’s surface.
This “Lunar Terrain Vehicle (LTV)” will be used in NASA’s upcoming Artemis missions, allowing astronauts to explore the challenging terrain of the lunar south pole, where temperatures vary drastically. The project aims not only to assist in exploration but also to build interplanetary infrastructure and utilize space resources. Additionally, when not used by NASA, the rover will be available for commercial missions.
NASA’s Artemis program aims to restore a human presence on the Moon, continuing the legacy of the Apollo missions. The first mission, Artemis I, took place in 2022 without a crew, followed by Artemis II, scheduled for 2026, which will take astronauts on a flight around the Moon.
In 2027, Artemis III will conduct the first crewed landing since the 1970s, and in 2028, Artemis IV will add a habitable module to the future Lunar Gateway orbital station, which will serve as a base for lunar travel.
NASA will invest up to $4.6 billion in the LTV project, developed in partnership with Lunar Outpost, Intuitive Machines, and Venturi Astrolab. The vehicle will need to withstand the extreme conditions of the Moon and will be autonomous, enabling continuous scientific exploration even without a crew present. The space agency plans at least 10 Artemis missions by 2035, significantly expanding our capacity to study and establish a presence in space.
