Elbit America has completed production of the first SIGMA NG self-propelled howitzer on U.S. soil, as part of the U.S. Army’s artillery modernization program.
The system is being pointed to as a potential replacement for the long-serving M109.
Equipped with a 155 mm gun with a 52-caliber barrel and a remotely operated turret, the SIGMA NG follows NATO standards and is compatible with modern ammunition. Its automated loading system allows a high rate of fire and significantly reduces exposure time in combat positions.
Mounted on the Oshkosh LVSR 10×10 chassis, the howitzer ensures integration with U.S. Army logistics. A crew of just three soldiers operates from a protected cabin, while four hydraulic stabilizers provide stability during firing. The vehicle can also carry up to 40 rounds with modular charges.
With a fully rotating 360-degree turret, the SIGMA NG eliminates common limitations found in wheeled systems. According to Elbit, the design is based on the Israeli Roem program, which has already been replacing the M109 within Israeli forces, reinforcing the platform’s maturity for potential adoption by the United States.
