A drone reportedly struck the boat of a flotilla led by activist Greta Thunberg during a mission to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip, according to the organizers.
The attack on the “Family Boat“, which was sailing under the Portuguese flag in Tunisian waters, was carrying members of the flotilla’s Steering Committee, the Global Sumud Flotilla said in a statement on Monday (Sept. 8).
The boat was still inside the Tunisian port of Sidi Bou Said when the drone hit, the Israel Times reported. The main deck and the hold below deck caught fire and were damaged, the organizers said.
Authorities said all six passengers and crew were safe. Images released by the group showed two people on the boat running after the alleged drone struck the vessel, creating a flash of light.
According to the Israeli newspaper Israel Hayom, Israel was waiting to intercept the latest flotilla, this time with a plan to detain activists under harsh “terror-level” conditions in detention centers.
Thunberg, the 22-year-old activist, was on one of the 20 boats that left Barcelona for Gaza on August 31, in what they called the “largest solidarity mission” in history. She said her flotilla was “part of a global uprising of people opposing” the “atrocities” in Gaza.
“Acts of aggression aimed at intimidating and sabotaging our mission will not stop us. Our peaceful mission to break the Gaza blockade and stand in solidarity with its people continues with resolve,” the Global Sumud Flotilla said in a statement following the alleged drone attack.
