New artificial intelligence (AI) cameras already in use by police in the UK are causing concerns for drivers, who may face substantial fines of up to about $2500.

These cameras, operated by technology company Jenoptik, were installed nationwide by the end of 2023 and are being used by ten police forces.

Capable of automatically detecting infractions such as mobile phone use while driving and lack of seatbelt, the cameras are connected to police and vehicle licensing agency databases, allowing for instant checks of taxes and insurance.

Matt Staton, Head of National Highways User Safety, expressed that the introduction of these cameras aims to increase awareness of driving behavior and ensure road safety.

While there are plans to expand the use of this technology until March 2025, it remains the responsibility of individual police forces to enforce infractions captured during the testing period.
