Ride-hailing Driver Charged Over $700 After Error at Newcastle Airport.

Trevor Storey, a taxi driver for over 25 years, was charged more than $700 after dropping a customer at Newcastle Airport in the UK.

The incident happened on two different days. The first time, Storey was charged $316 instead of the usual $5. He disregarded the charge, but on April 19th, he received another charge of $385, which raised his concern.

“I called the bank and explained what had happened, but they said they could not stop the transaction and I would need to speak with the airport,” Storey said.

He contacted the airport to resolve the issue. The authorities informed him that there was an error in the automatic number plate recognition system. Storey got his money back, but he remains worried that it could happen again.

“But imagine how many people this could happen to and they wouldn’t notice. It could have been someone’s last pound that they took and left them with nothing,” he said.

According to the Daily Star, a spokesperson for Newcastle International Airport stated that such mistakes can occur anywhere that uses Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) systems. This content was created with the help of AI and reviewed by the editorial team.
