A driver was arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence of a substance after being found with a large amount of marijuana in the car. He also had possession of a baby spider monkey.

Ali Mused Adel Mohamed was arrested for driving a 2022 Rolls-Royce Ghost at high speed on a highway in California. The Highway Patrol found a large quantity of marijuana in the vehicle and a baby spider monkey in the front seat.

“The driver had a baby monkey with him. That’s not something you see every day,” said Sergio Moreno, spokesperson for the CHP in Madera, to North Valley News. The animal was wearing a kind of pink onesie.

The primate was confiscated and taken to the Madera Animal Shelter. “Spider monkeys are illegal. You cannot own them,” warned Amy Toler, director of Madera County Animal Services.

Amy Toler reported that spider monkeys are on the list of endangered species. “This is not where they should be. We shouldn’t be taking care of these animals. They need to be in the wild, with their own species,” she added.

On December 31, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife took custody of the monkey. The department plans to transfer it to the Oakland Zoo.

Ali Mused Adel Mohamed was charged with possession of an exotic animal, among other offenses.
