Denmark carried out a medical evacuation from a US Navy nuclear-powered attack submarine operating near Greenland, the website UK Defence Blog reported.
Denmark’s Joint Arctic Command (Arktisk Kommando) announced that a crew member aboard a US submarine required urgent medical treatment and was airlifted approximately seven nautical miles from Nuuk, within Greenland’s territorial waters.
The evacuation was conducted using a Danish defense helicopter, an MH-60R Seahawk, deployed from a Royal Danish Navy inspection vessel.
The sailor was transferred to Greenlandic health authorities and admitted to a hospital in Nuuk. No additional details about the individual’s condition were disclosed.
The US submarine involved was identified as the USS Delaware (SSN-791), a Virginia-class fast attack submarine based in Groton, Connecticut.
Virginia-class submarines conduct intelligence collection, anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, strike missions, and support for special operations. Their deployment in Arctic waters and the North Atlantic reflects the growing strategic focus of the United States on the High North.
