The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has released the first video of trials for the experimental uncrewed vessel USX-1 Defiant, developed under the groundbreaking No Manning Required Ship (NOMARS) program.
With a displacement of 240 tons and a length of 55 meters, the Defiant was built by Serco at the Nichols Brothers Boat Builders shipyard in Freeland, Washington. Sea trials began in March 2025, marking a new chapter in military naval engineering.

A Radically Uncrewed Design
The NOMARS program introduces a disruptive shift in naval architecture. Unlike conventional ships, the USX-1 was designed from the ground up to operate without any human presence—not even spaces or systems to accommodate crew members were included in its design.
According to DARPA, by completely removing the human factor, the project aims to reduce the vessel’s size and cost, enhance its hydrodynamic efficiency, ensure greater resilience at sea, and improve survivability in combat scenarios through stealth, autonomy, and resistance to external interference.

Advanced Navigation and Perception Technology
To ensure the vessel’s autonomous navigation and safety, the Defiant is equipped with the advanced forward-looking sonar Argos FLS from FarSounder. Integrated with the navigation system, the sonar provides real-time situational awareness and aids in obstacle avoidance maneuvers.
In addition, the vessel incorporates the automatic route-planning system TVOS, developed by the British company Theyr, reinforcing the ship’s ability to operate with complete human independence.

A New Era for Naval Warfare
With the USX-1 Defiant, DARPA takes a concrete step toward the future of autonomous naval operations. Although the vessel is not equipped with combat systems, its role as a test platform lays the groundwork for developing a new generation of more effective, resilient, and stealthy uncrewed ships—capable of operating in hostile environments without putting human lives at risk.
