Drag racer Jason Hoard survived a serious crash last Saturday during a race at World Wide Technology Raceway in Illinois, United States.
He was participating in a “no time” format race, where car times are not displayed, when his dragster based on a Corvette C7 lost control and was launched into the air during the run. The car performed a backflip mid-air and flipped violently, crashing down onto the grass and breaking apart.
The crash occurred just after the start, as Hoard was trying to catch up to an opposing Mustang. The front of the Corvette lifted abruptly, causing the vehicle to take off and spin in the air, in a moment reminiscent of the famous Mercedes accidents at Le Mans in 1999.

Despite the terrifying scene, Hoard survived, though he suffered injuries including broken ribs and a possible collapsed lung.
A few days later, the driver thanked the team who built his car and the safety equipment, such as the Hans device, for saving his life. He also urged other drivers to ensure they are properly protected.
The incident also raises questions about the car’s aerodynamic design, which may have contributed to the crash.
