Anduril has released the first images of the Copperhead-500M, an autonomous underwater munition that is part of its new generation of subsea vehicles.

A short video shows the equipment operating just below the surface during recent tests, in which, according to the company, the system reached high speeds and performed advanced maneuvers in rough sea conditions.

Copperhead is part of a family of underwater drones designed for both surveillance and strike missions. The variants range from light to heavy models and can be equipped with sensors, communication systems, or impact payloads. The “M” variant indicates a torpedo-like design, while other configurations are focused exclusively on underwater data collection.

The company is betting on large-scale production and integration with different platforms, including larger maritime drones, aircraft, and surface vessels. Beyond military use, the technology can also be adapted for civilian operations such as rescue missions, inspection of critical infrastructure, and environmental monitoring. Countries like Australia are already investing in this type of system, highlighting growing global interest in autonomous maritime solutions.

Despite these advancements, Copperhead has not yet been integrated into the primary operational systems of the U.S. Navy. Even so, the trend suggests that these platforms will become part of a broader ecosystem of sensors and autonomous vehicles, gradually replacing traditional systems with higher costs and less flexibility.
