China took another step in its military modernization by displaying new images of the Z-21 helicopter, an attack model heavily inspired by the AH-64 Apache from the United States.
The prototype was recorded during a recent test flight, revealing a tandem-seat structure, tricycle landing gear, and a 30mm cannon mounted under the cockpit, as well as large optical sensors to enhance shooting accuracy.
According to Chinese media, the Z-21 has already completed live-fire tests and high-altitude evaluations in Tibet, an environment that previously posed limitations for the WZ-10. Capable of carrying up to 16 guided missiles and reaching speeds close to 350 km/h, the helicopter features four weapon hardpoints, enabling engagement with both aerial and ground targets.
The new model reflects China’s strategy to reduce the technological gap with the U.S. in the rotorcraft sector. With extended range, improved sensors, and an emphasis on military exports, the Z-21 could emerge as a direct competitor to Western helicopters, raising concerns about China’s ability to replicate or adapt advanced platforms for its own use and for third-party markets.

Heavy attack helicopters are still important, due to their carrying capacity for large weapons and long range.
New systems such as helicopter launched drone swarms can also extend the potency of attack helicopters. pic.twitter.com/6PW1CSJ1cx
