China is set to officially unveil its new stealth fighter, the J-35A, at an airshow in the city of Zhuhai, which will take place from November 12 to 17.

The fighter, which was showcased during a press conference, is seen as part of China’s efforts to modernize its military and compete with the stealth fighter capabilities of the United States. The J-35A is primarily designed for air combat but can also perform air-to-ground strikes.

With the introduction of the J-35A, China would become the second country, after the U.S., to operate two types of stealth fighters, as the J-20 has been in service since 2017. The new fighter has been developed over more than a decade and is expected to be assigned to the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN).

Experts believe the aircraft could be ready for production soon, and its capabilities will significantly strengthen China’s air and naval operations.

In addition to the J-35A, the airshow will feature the debut of the H-19 surface-to-air missile system and new reconnaissance and attack UAVs. It was also announced that Russia’s Su-57 stealth fighter will participate in the event for the first time, which will bring together equipment from 49 countries and regions.

Chinese authorities continue to face accusations that the country stole U.S. stealth fighter technology, allegations that Beijing vigorously denies.
