China is ramping up efforts to neutralize the Starlink satellite network from SpaceX, which is considered a direct threat to the country’s national security.
According to Chinese state media, the American satellite constellation is seen as a strategic asset of the United States in modern military operations, used for communication, drone control, nuclear deterrence, and space espionage.
Among the measures proposed by Chinese experts are the use of high-powered lasers, including those launched from submarines, as well as the development of satellites capable of hacking or disabling Starlink equipment. Sabotaging the supply chain of components is also considered, although diplomatic alternatives and international restrictions on private satellite networks are also being explored.
The Chinese alert follows Starlink’s rapid expansion in low Earth orbit, where the company already accounts for two-thirds of active satellites. The system’s performance in war scenarios, such as in Ukraine, reinforces its strategic importance.
In response, Beijing is investing in its own projects, such as Guowang and Qianfan, and preparing for possible confrontations in space, while the US has detected unusual maneuvers of orbital objects, signaling rising tensions in the space race.
