The Chinese government is evaluating the implementation of new regulations to limit the acceleration of cars used in major urban centers.
While automakers are seeking faster acceleration for their vehicles, China’s idea is to require cars to take at least 5 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h.
The project, titled *Technical Conditions for the Safety of Motor Vehicle Operation*, aims to reduce safety risks associated with excessive acceleration and sets out some rules for motor vehicles, especially electric ones.
As part of the new regulation, China’s Ministry of Public Security would require vehicles to be equipped with software to suppress accidental or incorrect acceleration, capable of limiting the car’s power to prevent dangerous starts.
According to the proposal, this limitation would only need to apply in specific situations. Cruise power would be maintained, but starts would need to be smoother and speed increases more gradual.
In this way, all drivers would benefit from increased safety, according to the local government. It is worth noting that the project is still in the public consultation phase as part of the revision of China’s national standards.
