China has shown the Type 100 tank carrying out field training exercises publicly for the first time, revealed Chinese state news agency Xinhua.
The Type 100 main battle tank is the next-generation armored platform of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) and appeared in footage released by Xinhua, according to a report by Defence Blog.
In the images, the Type 100 can be seen maneuvering at high speed across dusty terrain, creating clouds of dust as it moves through what appears to be a training ground in northern China.
The Type 100, designated ZTZ-100, was publicly unveiled for the first time during China’s 70th Victory Anniversary military parade, where its unmanned turret and advanced sensor suite immediately drew the attention of defense analysts.
Since that appearance, public sightings of the platform have been scarce, making the training footage shared by Xinhua a significant milestone in terms of what it reveals about the system’s development status.
In addition to demonstrating the tank’s specifications, the footage, which shows the tank moving across difficult terrain while being operated by soldiers, confirms that the platform has progressed beyond a static parade display and has reached the stage of functional operational training.
Whether the Type 100 has already reached serial production cannot be determined from this footage alone, but its appearance in itself suggests that China is working with a small number of development or pre-production vehicles, rather than a fully fielded fleet.
