China has registered a patent for a foldable anti-drone canopy for tanks, inspired by a system developed in Ukraine to protect armored vehicles from aerial attacks.

The device, developed by Dragon Shield Intelligent Equipment, combines a lightweight, explosion-resistant mesh with a motorized mechanism that allows it to open and retract as needed, increasing protection without compromising the tanks’ mobility.

The system is mounted on top of the tank’s hull, independent of the turret, and covers the upper surfaces to prevent damage caused by drones carrying improvised explosives or anti-armor munitions. The initiative reflects a global trend of adapting simple but effective solutions to protect tank crews amid the growing use of FPV drones and quadcopters in conflicts.

Previously, Russia had already copied rudimentary versions of the Ukrainian concept, and now China refines the idea with industrialized resources and automation to facilitate operation. Although there is still no confirmation of mass production or integration into the People’s Liberation Army, the initiative demonstrates how combat technologies developed in Ukraine are rapidly influencing the defense strategies of other countries.
