China has officially commissioned its fourth Type 075 amphibious assault ship, named Hubei and identified by the number 34.
The launch took place in December 2023 at the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyard in Shanghai, and the ship underwent a series of tests throughout 2024, including joint exercises with other Chinese vessels, indicating it had already been operating prior to the official announcement.
The Type 075 ships are part of China’s strategy to strengthen its oceanic fleet with advanced amphibious capabilities. With a displacement of between 35,000 and 40,000 tons, a length of over 230 meters, and a width of 36 meters, these vessels can carry marines, military equipment, and helicopters, enabling landing operations in distant regions. So far, China has commissioned three other ships of this type, named Hainan, Guangxi, and Anhui.
Despite its significant size, the Type 075 is smaller than the latest ship of Project 076, the Sichuan, launched in late 2024, which is even larger and more capable.
The progress in the construction of these ships reflects China’s strategic ambitions in Asia, particularly the expansion of its navy’s expeditionary operations and possible actions related to the Taiwan issue.
