China has developed a new military technology capable of creating a “ghost fleet” on enemy radar using only one real vessel.

The innovation was developed by the Beijing Telemetry Research Institute and works through small, low-cost electronic devices that emit false signals, making a single warship appear as multiple ones on enemy tracking systems. This tactic is designed to confuse adversaries and conceal the true location—crucial in naval warfare.

The system uses coordinated electronic jammers that generate virtual clones of the real ship, even simulating the electromagnetic signatures of modern vessels.

Unlike previous, more expensive and less realistic technologies, this model can dynamically adapt during combat, adjusting signals in real-time based on operational needs. Researchers refer to this capability as “electromagnetic environment sculpting.”

Despite its advantages—such as the ability to mislead missiles and deceive entire fleets—the system still has vulnerabilities. Its 1-bit processing simplicity makes it susceptible to countermeasures, prompting developers to plan improvements using artificial intelligence to make it more resilient and efficient in the future.
