China has delivered the third Hangor class submarine, an export version of the Type 039B, to Pakistan in a ceremony held on August 14 in Wuhan, Hubei province.
Pakistan had acquired eight units of this class back in 2015, with four built at the Karachi Shipyard and four at Chinese facilities.
The program experienced significant delays: the keel of the first submarine was only laid in 2022 and it was launched in 2024, despite the initial plan calling for the delivery of four units between 2022 and 2023 and the remainder by 2028. The previous submarine was delivered in March 2025.
Hangor-class submarines are 76 meters long and displace about 2,800 tons. They are equipped with six 533 mm torpedo tubes at the bow, capable of launching Pakistani Babur cruise missiles and Chinese YJ-82 anti-ship missiles, significantly strengthening Pakistan’s naval capability.
