The People’s Liberation Army of China has begun introducing a new short-range air defense system, known as the HQ-13, as part of the modernization of its forces.

The system, mounted on a Dongfeng Mengshi 6×6 armored vehicle, combines FB-10A missiles, radar, and command and launch systems on a single platform, providing mobile protection against low-altitude threats such as drones, helicopters, and cruise missiles.

With an estimated range of up to 18 kilometers, the HQ-13 is designed to accompany combined-arms brigades, reinforcing the defense of strategic points and units in operation. Each vehicle operates autonomously, with its own target detection and engagement capabilities, facilitating use in dispersed operations and reducing the need for logistical support.

While the version intended for the Chinese army is being deployed, its export variant, the FB-10A, has already drawn international attention. A batch intended for Chad was diverted and ended up in the hands of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces, a paramilitary group involved in the ongoing conflict in the African country.
