China is preparing a major modernization of the J-20 stealth fighter, with improvements to its radar, engines, and artificial intelligence integration, to strengthen the role of the fifth-generation jet in air warfare.

According to military analyst Zhang Xuefeng, in an interview with state broadcaster CCTV, the “Mighty Dragon” also operates in coordination with stealth drones and early warning aircraft, expanding the combat capabilities of the Chinese Air Force.

In service since 2017, the J-20 has become a symbol of the country’s military modernization and the People’s Liberation Army’s main asset against the United States’ most advanced stealth fighters. The model combines a low radar signature, an absorbent coating, an internal weapons bay, supersonic cruising capability, high maneuverability, and advanced avionics systems, which are now set for a new cycle of upgrades.

Key priorities include increasing the range and jamming resistance of air-to-air missiles, as well as continued engine development. After using Russian engines and intermediate Chinese versions, the J-20 now operates with the advanced WS-15. AI integration is also seen as strategic, allowing the fighter to use autonomous support systems in medium- and long-range combat, including beyond visual range.

China already operates variants such as the J-20A and J-20S, the world’s first twin-seat stealth fighter, designed to command swarms of drones in combat. Recent exercises have shown the J-20 operating alongside the GJ-11 stealth drone and the J-16D fighter in a manned-unmanned cooperation model.

Meanwhile, Beijing is advancing the development of two sixth-generation stealth fighters, known as the J-36 and J-50, which have already conducted test flights and are attracting international attention.
