The People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy) has begun the process of rearming its carrier-based aviation.

As part of this modernization, the Zhi-9S and Ka-52 helicopters are being replaced by the new Zhi-20F anti-submarine helicopters aboard the fourth production batch of Type 052D guided-missile destroyers.

The move aims to enhance the Chinese fleet’s ability to detect and combat enemy submarines.

The Zhi-20F will also be deployed on other Chinese Navy vessels, including the Type 054B frigates, Type 052D/DM and Type 055 destroyers, Type 075 amphibious assault ships, as well as the Type 003 and Type 004 Fujian-class aircraft carriers.

Zhi-20F Specifications:

  • Length: 20 meters
  • Height: 5.3 meters
  • Maximum speed: 360 km/h
  • Cruising speed: 290 km/h
  • Maximum takeoff weight: 10 tons
  • Service ceiling: 6,000 meters
  • Flight range: 560 km

The helicopter is powered by two WZ-10 turboshaft engines, each producing between 2,100 and 2,700 horsepower. Compared to its predecessors, the Ka-28 and Zhi-9C, the Zhi-20F requires less maintenance and offers greater reliability in high-salinity environments, making it a more efficient option for naval operations.

In addition to its main role of submarine hunting, the Zhi-20F can also carry out secondary missions such as patrol, reconnaissance, logistical support, and casualty evacuation, making it a versatile asset in China’s naval aviation.
