A rare Chevrolet Astra 500, manufactured in the year 2000 as part of a limited edition commemorating the 500th anniversary of Brazil’s discovery, was found after spending eight years parked in a garage in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre.
The car, with only 26,000 km on the odometer, is in excellent condition, which caught the attention of entrepreneur and relic hunter Marcos Freitas Bilhar. He learned about the vehicle through his mechanic, who knew the owner — a doctor whose late mother had kept the car stored away.
Despite lengthy negotiations lasting about a year and a half, Marcos was finally able to see the car in person, even with access difficulties due to the amount of clutter around it. The main issue with the Astra was mold on the seats and panels, as well as the absence of collector-valued items such as the original manual.
Even so, the 2.0 gasoline engine and five-speed manual transmission appear to be in great shape. The vehicle is now undergoing a full mechanical overhaul to get back on the road.
Experts note that because it’s a limited edition and in good condition, the Astra 500 could be worth much more than standard 2000 models, which average $2,472.82. According to expert Silvio Luiz, cars like this, when well preserved, can fetch up to $34,000 on the collector market.
These vehicles are rarely sold to the general public, typically changing hands among enthusiasts through direct contacts or specialized dealers.
