Disney is finally bringing its beloved Cars franchise to the Magic Kingdom park in Orlando, Florida.
The company announced that it will create a special area to celebrate the popular film series, featuring two new attractions. This new area will replace the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island areas.
The main attraction will be a high-speed, rally-style track designed to simulate “races through rocky terrain, mountain peak climbs, and geyser detours,” according to Disney.
The second attraction, which has yet to be officially announced, will be geared toward younger children and families. “Our main goal is to create an emotional experience for our guests,” said Michael Hundgen during a presentation at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
“For this Cars attraction, we need to invent a new kind of ride vehicle. No one builds this in a factory because it has to do much more than just transport you from one place to another. We have to create a car that conveys a feeling when you ride in it.”
“We’re using a custom production vehicle. It has sensors all over it, and we’re doing driving tests on our dirt track to collect data on how the vehicle responds to different terrains. This is where we take the feeling we want and turn it into real-world engineering,” Hundgen added.
Disney has already begun construction of the new Cars attractions at Magic Kingdom, but the company has stated that the area at the Orlando park will likely not be ready before 2028.
