A car salesman issued a warning to couples who take out joint financing after receiving a woman who wanted to remove her boyfriend’s name from the car title after they broke up.

Mike posted a video on his TikTok profile to share what happened. According to him, the couple had financed a 2022 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport, but after the breakup, the woman said she wanted to remove her ex’s name from the car title.

The salesman explained in the clip that the car cost $35,000 and both had excellent credit scores. They had put $3,500 down and financed the remaining amount over 72 months, with monthly payments of just $565 at 9% interest.

Everything was going well until they broke up. The woman then called Mike to ask for her ex’s name to be removed from the car title. Mike was emphatic: “Ok, that’s impossible unless you go to your bank.”

He explained to her that since the car was not paid off, she would have to go to the bank with her ex to remove the name from the title. She refused, saying she would return the car to the dealership.

Mike then emphasized that they could not simply take the car back. Even so, the woman brought the Atlas back to the dealership and simply left it there. When asked if she would return to pick it up, she said no.

The salesman then decided to call the ex-boyfriend to explain the situation to him. He also refused to pick up the Atlas and said he was not willing to remove his name from the title either. Even after Mike told him he would end up with a repossession on his credit, the man still refused.

Afterward, Mike called the woman back to try to convince her to keep making payments or at least inform the bank that she wanted to voluntarily surrender the car. “I want the car, but I want his name off of it,” she stated again.

In the end, she chose to do nothing and let the vehicle be repossessed by the bank. “If you’re going to finance a car with someone, make sure that […] you’re going to be with them for 72 months. That’s all I’m saying. You can’t remove someone’s name from the title while you’re financing it unless you refinance it,” Mike concluded.

Mike’s account has already amassed more than 25,000 views and, in the comments, users emphasized how this type of financing is quite delicate and is usually not taken seriously by couples who act in the heat of the moment.

“There’s enough risk in doing that when you’re married, especially if they recently got married, but getting financially involved with someone you’re not married to is never a good idea,” warned one TikTok user.

“Those [two] had to be young people! I wouldn’t even co-sign with my wife,” argued another. “People’s stupidity continues to surprise me. She wants to return the car like it’s a dress bought at a department store,” quipped a third user.
