Images from the San Bruno, California Police Department captured the moment officers stopped a driverless Waymo vehicle during a drunk driving operation.
The autonomous vehicle committed a violation in front of the officers, according to the police. “That’s right… No driver, no hands, no clue,” the department wrote.
Waymo was contacted to be informed about the violation. “Since there was no human driver, it was not possible to issue a ticket (our ticket books don’t have a box for ‘robot’),” the department said in a Facebook post.
“We hope the reprogramming will prevent it from committing more illegal maneuvers,” they added.
The police stated that legislation is currently underway to allow companies to be fined if their vehicles drive recklessly.
“Whether drivers, passengers, or even autonomous cars, we will continue doing our part to keep the streets of San Bruno safe,” the department said.
Waymo operates in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, and Atlanta.
