With the inauguration of the Jinan ship, BYD now transports 1 million cars per year. The eighth ship is a hybrid powered by both fuel oil and LNG (liquefied natural gas), assisted by BYD batteries.
The Shenzhen, Xi’an, and Changsha ships also feature the same distinctive propulsion capabilities as the Jinan.
BYD’s new launch has a transport capacity of up to 9,200 cars. Previous ships, Changzhou, Hefei, and Zhengzhou, carry up to 7,000 cars, as does the fleet’s first ship, Explorer No.1, inaugurated in 2024.
The Chinese automaker can transport up to 64,800 vehicles with the full capacity of its fleet, serving a global scale.
The brand aims to ensure autonomy without relying on rented vessels. BYD invested the equivalent of US$564 million to build its eight RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) ships.
