BYD has opened an all-terrain racing track for new energy vehicles (NEVs) in Zhengzhou, northern China.

The track, specially designed for NEVs, offers a perfect venue for racing, professional driver training, and various circuit experiences.

Unlike conventional single-track designs, the all-terrain circuit integrates vehicle water crossings, indoor sand dune climbing, and off-road tracks, allowing visitors to experience various scenarios all in one place.

The sand dunes at the Zhengzhou track were built with 6,200 tons of sand to mimic the granular composition of the Alxa Desert in Inner Mongolia.

With a vertical drop of 29.6 meters and a slope of 28 degrees, the dune has been certified by the Guinness World Records as the largest and tallest climbing facility for car testing.

Currently, there are 27 off-road scenarios ranging from beginner to advanced levels. Although the surface conditions are challenging, even an urban SUV driver can confidently drive on beginner-level terrain with the brand’s intelligent all-wheel drive.

The 70-meter-long water crossing pool was exclusively designed for BYD’s YANGWANG U8, which features technology built for extreme driving conditions.

Through the underwater observation glass, visitors can watch the vehicle maneuvering forward, turning, or reversing in the water effortlessly, controlled by the e4 platform.

The circuit also serves as an ideal location for demonstrations of NEV safety technologies. The Kick Plate, for example, simulates icy road conditions on a polished, wet concrete surface.

Using movable suction plates to simulate loss of control, the system allows drivers to practically experience BYD vehicle safety features, all within a controlled environment.

In addition to the Zhengzhou Circuit, BYD will soon open facilities in Hefei and Shaoxing. Notably, the off-road area in Shaoxing will cover 800 hectares at an altitude of 500 meters.

“BYD circuits will accelerate the professionalization of China’s NEV racing events and reshape the country’s automotive culture,” said Guojun Zhan, president of the China Automobile and Motorcycle Sports Federation (CAMF).
