Chinese EV giant BYD announced a new charging system this Monday (17) that would be capable of providing an electric car with 400 km of range in just five minutes of charging.

The automaker introduced its system, dubbed “Super E-Platform“, as capable of charging its latest models in just five minutes, allowing them to travel 400 km with this quick charge.

To support the new technology, BYD plans to build 4,000 ultra-fast charging stations across China.

Experts expect that if this innovation becomes widespread, it will completely change the global electric vehicle market. For comparison, Tesla’s charging stations offer a range of 320 km with 15 minutes of charging.

“Our goal is to make electric vehicle charging as fast as refueling a gasoline car,” said Wang Chuanfu, BYD’s president, at the launch event.

Pre-sales of the new BYD models equipped with the latest fast-charging technology began on Monday, with deliveries scheduled to start next month.
