The Bundeswehr has received the first five pre-production Patria 6×6 armored personnel carriers, marking the start of the modernization of a significant portion of Germany’s land fleet.
In total, Germany plans to acquire up to 876 units of the model, which will gradually replace the old TPz Fuchs, in service since the 1980s.
The official delivery took place at the Zeithain logistics depot and was conducted by Patria, responsible for the vehicle’s development. According to the Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment (BAAINBw), the armored vehicles will be available in different versions, serving engineering troops and armored reconnaissance units. Additionally, the platform will serve as the base for the NEMO mortar system.
The project is part of the international Common Armoured Vehicle System program, which brings together Germany, Finland, Latvia, Sweden, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Norway in the joint development of armored vehicles. The initiative aims to standardize capabilities, reduce costs, and strengthen industrial cooperation among the participating countries.
Initially, production will take place in Finland and Latvia, but serial manufacturing will be transferred to Germany, with participation from local companies such as KNDS Deutschland. The first vehicles produced on German soil are expected to be delivered starting in 2027, under contracts exceeding US$ 2.36 billion.
