Bulgaria has received the first batch of Stryker armored vehicles, marking the start of deliveries planned under the country’s Land Forces modernization program.
Five combat vehicles arrived at the port of Burgas on February 14, 2026, according to the Bulgarian Ministry of Defense. The vehicles were provided by the United States and Canada under international defense agreements signed during the current government’s term.
After unloading, the armored vehicles will be transported to the TEREM–Ivaylo industrial unit in Veliko Tarnovo, where they will undergo final assembly before being delivered to the 61st Mechanized Brigade, based in Karlovo. The contract provides for industrial cooperation and participation of the local industry in the assembly process, strengthening the national defense sector.
In addition to the five purchased vehicles, the country also received eight more Strykers at no cost through a U.S. assistance program, primarily intended for troop training.
The shipment also included logistical vehicles and equipment related to the F-16 Fighting Falcon acquisition program, demonstrating that modernization is occurring in parallel across both land and air forces. The Stryker is an eight-wheeled armored vehicle designed for rapid deployment and mechanized infantry operations. Developed for the U.S. Army, it can perform multiple missions such as troop transport, reconnaissance, command, and fire support, offering protection against small arms fire, artillery shrapnel, and improvised threats.
According to the Ministry of Defense, the arrival of the first vehicles represents the practical start of one of Bulgaria’s largest military modernization projects. The goal is to replace Soviet-era platforms still in use and align the Land Forces with NATO standards, increasing interoperability with allied countries. The 61st Mechanized Brigade, which will play a central role in integrating the new armored vehicles, regularly participates in alliance exercises in Eastern Europe and will be a key element in this structural transition.
