Hydra Drones, a British defense company, has opened a new funding round worth US$ 5.4 million to complete the development of its new heavy-lift drone, the HYDRA-400.
The drone is described as a portable and multifunctional system capable of lifting a payload of up to 400 kilograms, placing it at the upper end of the unmanned logistics and lifting category.
The HYDRA-400 is the result of five years of development that included several prototype iterations and engineering work on a proprietary hybrid electric-jet propulsion system, according to the company.
According to Hydra, the funding will be used to complete the final phase of research and development of its new drone and to prepare the HYDRA-400 for mass production.
“After five years of relentless R&D, engineering breakthroughs, and multiple prototype iterations, Hybrid Drones Limited (HYDRA) is entering the final stretch of development of our flagship platform – the HYDRA-400,” the company said in a statement.
According to Hydra, potential applications for the platform range from defense and humanitarian aid to logistics, energy, construction, and emergency response. Among the most prominent investors is defense industry giant MBDA.
“Our original collaboration with MBDA was a major validation of our agile and innovative technological approach,” said Dr. Stephen Prior, chief executive officer of Hybrid Drones Ltd.
“This additional investment in our business means more than just financial backing. It enables us to make a significant contribution to national defense capabilities while keeping our highly skilled workforce local,” Prior added.
