In 2024, the BMW Z4 manual saw success in the US, accounting for 65% of the total sales of the model in the country, despite the brand only selling 2,129 units that year.

This number marked a significant increase compared to 2023, when 1,883 units were sold, showing that American buyers prefer the manual version. BMW believes that the introduction of the manual transmission was crucial to this growth in sales, with the public’s response being very positive.

The manual Z4 is exclusive to the M40i model, which comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged engine, offering 382 horsepower, compared to the standard Z4, which has a 2.0-liter engine with 255 horsepower.

The M40i starts at $68,175, with an additional $3,500 for the Edition Handschalter package, which includes the manual transmission. Therefore, the total price for those wanting the manual model is at least $71,675.

Interestingly, the popularity of the manual version of the Z4 in the US is on par with that of the Toyota Supra, where 65% of units sold in 2024 were also manuals. While BMW has had success with the manual in models like the M2, the numbers for the M3 and M4 were lower, with only 20% and 15% of buyers opting for the manual transmission, respectively.
