BMW has issued a recall affecting over 720,000 vehicles of various models due to a potential short circuit under the hood that could cause a fire.

According to recall documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), BMW was notified in January about a “thermal event” that occurred in an unspecified vehicle in the United States.

An investigation revealed other similar incidents, leading to detailed studies of the water pump and a specific electrical connector associated with it.

The analysis indicated that, in rare situations, “fluid expelled by the intake hose” could reach the connector, compromising the seal and allowing fluid to enter the plug, resulting in a short circuit.

In the recall schedule, BMW has recorded 18 cases where claims or actual damage occurred due to this issue. Fortunately, the automaker is not aware of any injuries or accidents related to the faulty plug.

Listed under recall number 24V-608 from NHTSA, the action covers a wide range of BMW vehicles manufactured between 2012 and 2018. To address the issue, BMW will inspect the water pump and plug, replacing them if damaged. Additionally, a shield will be installed to prevent fluids from reaching the plug.
