BMW M is developing high-performance electric cars expected to hit the market by the end of the decade.

Currently, models like the i5 M60 and i7 M70 are part of the M Performance lineup but are not yet full M cars. Prototyping began with the i4 M50, which was the division’s best-selling model in 2022 and 2023. A recent video revealed development details, highlighting that future electric M models will feature four motors, delivering unprecedented performance and capabilities.

The prototypes, in addition to the four motors, include significant improvements such as carbon-ceramic brakes, reinforced body structures, and new subframes, although further adjustments have yet to be disclosed.

During testing, technical issues were identified and addressed, demonstrating BMW’s transparency in the process. For instance, a BMW X7 was needed to jump-start one of the prototypes after failures in the air-conditioning compressor and front motors.

As BMW progresses with the development of an electric sedan similar to the M3, expected in 2027 or 2028, the brand confirms it will continue investing in the combustion-engine M3 model. A new generation of this sedan, codenamed “G84,” is planned for 2028, featuring all-wheel drive and automatic transmission, keeping the tradition of gasoline engines alive in BMW’s lineup.
