After being criticized for using images generated by artificial intelligence in its press releases, BMW doubled down and published a video evaluating the possibility of using humanoid robots to produce vehicles in the future.

In addition to the video, the German manufacturer also released a statement saying that “the BMW Group is consistently advancing the digitalization and use of artificial intelligence in production.”

“A key element in this effort is ‘Physical AI,’ which combines artificial intelligence with real machines and robots. This allows intelligent systems, such as humanoid robots, to be integrated into real-world production processes,” the company said in the statement.

“For the first time, the BMW Group is now bringing Physical AI to Europe and launching a pilot project with humanoid robots at the Leipzig plant. The project aims to integrate humanoid robotics into the existing series production of cars and explore additional applications in battery and component manufacturing.”

The robot in question is the AEON, built by the company Hexagon. For now, it appears that the idea behind the project is to reduce the risk of critical safety needs that could be harmful to humans.

The first tests with the AEON at BMW’s factory in Leipzig, Germany, are scheduled to take place as early as next month, with a full implementation of the pilot program planned for the second half of this year.
