BMW is investing in technologies that automate the use of turn signals in its vehicles, aiming to solve the reluctance of many drivers to indicate lane changes.

In some models from the brand, such as the BMW iX and i5 launched in 2024, it is already possible to activate the turn signal and even perform an overtaking maneuver with just a glance, as long as the GPS and autonomous driving mode are in use.

This technology is being refined with the arrival of the new BMW iX3, expected by the end of the year. The model debuts the “Heart of Joy” system, an electronic hub that integrates all of the car’s control functions, using artificial intelligence and promising almost instant responses. As a result, the interaction between driver and vehicle becomes more fluid and intuitive.

The next step, according to BMW, is to make the turn signal fully automatic. The system would be capable of analyzing context, such as the driver’s usual route, road signs, and GPS data, to activate the turn signal even before the driver decides to change direction.

The proposal represents yet another step forward in the concept of assisted driving with human-machine interaction.
