BMW has announced that it will abandon panels with large integrated screens in its new models, adopting an innovative concept called Panoramic iDrive.
The brand’s development director, Frank Weber, highlighted that the increase in screen size has harmed the driving experience by diverting the driver’s attention. As a result, the current “Curved Display” will be replaced by a more functional and safer approach, presented at the latest CES.
The Panoramic iDrive will feature a diamond-shaped central entertainment screen and a narrow panoramic display that will extend across almost the entire width of the windshield, offering configurable functions.
In addition, BMW plans to eliminate the traditional iDrive controller from the center console, transferring the main controls to the steering wheel and allowing touch interaction directly on the screen. A physical button for volume control will also be maintained, meeting user demand.
The size of the screens may vary depending on the model and vehicle category, but all new BMW releases will follow this standard. The first car to debut the new feature will be the second generation of the iX3, expected in the coming months.
